SIEMT offers five basic EMT courses and three EMT & paramedic refresher courses each year.  EMT classes offered in Staten Island are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (with the occasional Wednesday) from 7pm-10:30pm.  EMT classes offered in Brooklyn are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings (with the occasional Tuesday) from 7pm-10:30pm.  Please check the calendar page for more details regarding dates, refresher programs, and registration.

This program is the revised New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician curriculum, which includes lectures & practical skill sessions, 2020 CPR/AED guidelines, Haz Mat & Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training. In addition to classroom time, all students are required to spend 16 hours of clinical observation on an Ambulance, which will be arranged by the training center.  This program meets & exceeds the FDNY requirement  for the Civil Service position of EMT & Firefighter.

PREREQUISITES:  Applicants must be Seventeen years old by the end of the course, and be able to read & write in English.

SI LOCATION: SIEMT Training Center, 94 McClean Ave, Staten Island, NY 10305.

 

 

TUITION: $1,450.00 that will be paid as follows: A non-refundable $200.00 deposit upon submission of this application which reserves your seat and covers the enrollment fee. The $1250.00 balance is due on or before the first night of class. We accept Zelle, Cash, Checks, & all Credit Cards.  If you are in need of a payment plan, please contact the Course Sponsor Administrator directly to discuss (Billy.McDonald@siemt.info)  (Note a 3% charge will be added for credit card usage).   We encourage students who have their own laptop or tablet to utilize it during the class.  If the student does not have access to a laptop or tablet there will be a mandatory $100 deposit for a tablet which will be issued and has all course materials.  Upon return of the tablet to SIEMT by the student the deposit will be refunded. Students will have the option to use the deposit of $100 towards the CEVO V course ($50), which provides the student additional points on the FDNY EMT exam. 

The tuition includes all necessary technology,  EMT equipment (class ID, class shirt, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, pocket face mask, oxygen wrench, and penlight) and study materials.

The program will meet on select evenings from 7:00pm to 11:00 pm or various other days according to the schedule.  

This course will be conducted using the REVISED 2015 NHTSA & NYS BEHS EMT STANDARDS, 2020 NYS BLS protocols and the 2020 CPR Standard and will begin with the newest guidelines & protocols published:  These topics include revised patient assessment terminology and procedure, expanded depth of knowledge on the physiology and pathophysiology of the body and disease processes, life span development, special needs populations, CPAP, venturi masks, NYS BLS protocols (IM epi injections, aspirin administration, nasal Narcan, Nitroglycerin assistance by EMT’s, and spinal restriction update etc.).

Students will complete both a challenge written and skill examination.  Based on the results of the examinations, the student will be required to attend the sessions where they show weakness.  The course  will begin with the written challenge exam followed by a challenge skill exam the following week.  Students will be given contracts with their mandatory sessions, which must be signed in order to remain in the program.  ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR TESTING & CPR.  All students must also complete the NYSEMS mandatory online 2019 EMT Protocol update. To do so go to the following web site www.VitalSignsAcademy.com and submit the completion form electronically prior to the first night session.  All students must also provide evidence of completion of ICS 100, ICS 700, and IS-5A.

 

The SIEMT New York State Paramedic Challenge Refresher course which will be held at the SIEMT Training Center and leads to eligibility to take the New York State Examination for re-certification as a paramedic.  

This program is the revised New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician - paramedic curriculum, which includes lectures & practical skill sessions, Mandatory 2020 CPR/AED guidelines and optional ACLS and PALS renewals  This program meets & exceeds the FDNY requirement  for the Civil Service position of EMT-Paramedic & Firefighter.

 

Number of Hours: Didactic hours will be determined based on the results of each individual student's challenge written examination.  Skill lab sessions will be based on the results of the practical challenge examination.

 Current Format: All didactic sessions are conducted either in person or on-line with students only appearing for evaluation and required skill sessions.  

Total Cost: $700.00 if not eligible for NYS EMS tuition (Includes $200 NON-REFUNDABLE Seat Deposit **Note ACLS and PALS are $150 each if needed)

Total Cost: Members of Approved New York State EMS Agencies pay full tuition up front ($200 NON-REFUNDABLE) and will recieve reimbursement upon passing the New York State Exam and reimbursement made to SIEMT by the NYS BEMS.  (Seat Deposit due upon registration that can be applied towards ACLS and PALS cost if needed).  Any other finanical arrangements should be made directly with the sponsor administrator.

Course DescriptionThis Program is conducted utilizing a “challenge” format. Students have the option to have their participation for on-line assignments or practical skills sessions waived for successfully completing a written challenge and/or practical skills examination.  Each student is provided a customized learning program to ensure successful completion of course objectives and required psychomotor skills. Students are also provided with a review of New York State Protocol and Policy changes that may have occurred since their last credentialing period.

Upon Course Completion: Students who successfully complete all aspects of this program will be eligible to participate in New York State and National Registry & Written Examinations.  Students will have also achieved credentials in the following disciplines:

Active Violence Emergency Response Training (AVERT) gives you the tools to understand how to recognize warning signs, react quickly in an active shooter situation, and learn how to control bleeding in life-threatening situations. AVERT is active shooter response training with the addition of techniques on how to stop the bleed of victims.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Initial

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers - Online With Skills Check

The BLS Instructor course is designed to prepare instructor candidates to teach American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider and Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED courses. Instructor candidates learn how to use AHA Instructor teaching materials, ensure that students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and follow AHA Instructor and course policies.   Course includes the AHA BLS Instructor Manual and USB.  Student must take the online Instructor Essentials and provide a copy of the certificate prior to the class.

 

You will be able to teach the AHA’s BLS course training participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED upon completion of the Instructor Course and monitoring.

Reflecting science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

During the Heartsaver® First Aid/CPR/AED course, students will be taught various aspects of emergency response including CPR and how to operated an AED (Automatic External Defibrilator).  Students who successfully complete the course, including all skills, will receive a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course Completion card, valid for two years.

Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator IV (CEVO IV) covers the basics of emergency ambulance operations including vehicle inspections, non-emergency vehicle operations, emergency vehicle operations, vehicle and traffic laws, and various other traffic situations.

An electrocardiogram records the electrical signals in the heart. Also abbreviated as an EKG or ECG, an electrocardiogram is a common and painless test used to quickly detect heart problems and monitor the heart’s health. Based on what an EKG shows, a healthcare provider may be able to treat a potential life threatening arrythmia and limit dame to the patient and/or heart muscle. SIEMT EKG courses can be tailored for both simply performing EKGs as well as reading and interpreting the rhythms.

National CPS Certification Training is a program of Safe Kids Worldwide, which is the certifying body and responsible for managing all aspects of the program. SIEMT works closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (responsible for the curriculum) and the National Child Passenger Safety Board (provides recommendations and guidance). CPS technicians do so much to help keep kids safe, from car seat checks to helping parents and caregivers understand all they can do to prevent unintentional injuries in and around cars. We provide personal protective mask fit testing for all healthcare workers and first responders to protect them from inhaled bacteria, viruses, weapons, and other substances. Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) remains the gold standard of education for emergency medical assessment and treatment. Endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians, AMLS emphasizes the use of the AMLS Assessment Pathway, a systematic tool for assessing and managing common medical conditions with urgent accuracy.

In the third edition of AMLS, students learn to recognize and manage common medical crises through realistic case-based scenarios that challenge students to apply their knowledge to highly critical patients.  The course emphasizes the use of scene size-up, first impression, history, interactive group discussion on differential diagnosis and potential treatment strategies, and physical exam to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical crises. The third edition AMLS library of patient simulations offers students an opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to a variety of patient presentations. Additional features include patient simulation monitor images and ECGs provided by iSimulate, to enhance students’ experience.

The course utilizes the AMLS textbook and course manual, and covers the following topics:

AMLS is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and physicians. AMLS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

The All Hazards Disaster Response (AHDR) course teaches students how to respond to the many types of disaster scenarios they may encounter, including natural disasters and infrastructure failings, fires and radiological events, pandemics, active shooter incidents, and other mass casualty events. AHDR educates participants on how to analyze potential threats in their area, assess available resources, and create a response plan that will save lives.

Features of a medical response plan covered in the course include:

  • Communicating effectively during disasters.
  • Mutual aid and interoperability.
  • Managing resources such as supplies, medications and equipment.
  • Triage and transportation strategies and challenges.
  • Patient tracking and evacuation.

At the start of the course, participants conduct a “hazards vulnerability analysis” to assess features of their environment, both natural and man-made, that pose risk along with assessing the needs of vulnerable populations, such as assisted-living residents or hospital patients that need special consideration during such an event.

 Content is presented in the context of realistic scenarios, culminating with a large-scale mass casualty activity. 

AHDR is appropriate for all levels of EMS practitioners. This course is offered in the classroom and provides 8 hours of CAPCE credit and NREMT recognition.

NAEMT’s Community Paramedicine course series focuses on the knowledge and skills that paramedics need to succeed as community paramedics. As paramedics are increasingly depended upon to provide preventive as well as emergent and urgent care, these courses are outstanding education for all paramedics. The series is also designed to prepare paramedics to take the IBSC Community Paramedic certification (CP-C) exam.

The courses within the series may be taught individually or combined to create a semester-long community paramedicine program. Individual courses within the series include:

All approved NAEMT training centers are eligible to offer the courses in the Community Paramedicine series. Course materials consisting of the Instructor Guide, Course Lessons, Patient Simulations, Course Schedule, and Final Exam will be available at no cost to training centers in the secured documents folder in the NAEMT Education Portal. 

Instructor eligibility for any of the courses in the Community Paramedicine series will be:

  • licensed at the paramedic level or above; and
  • either a current CAAHEP-accredited paramedic program instructor, AMLS instructor, IBSC-certified Community Paramedic, or Military Medical Specialties (Air Force Independent Duty Medical Technician, Special Operations Forces Medic and Navy Independent Duty Corpsman). 

The Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) course focuses on critical pediatric physiology, illnesses, injuries and interventions to help EMS practitioners provide the best treatment for sick and injured children in the field. The course stresses critical thinking skills to help practitioners make the best decisions for their young patients.

Topics covered include:

The pathophysiology of the most common critical pediatric emergency issues, and critical thinking skills to help practitioners make the best decisions for their patients.
Application of the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT), a tool to help EMS practitioners rapidly and accurately assess pediatric patients.
The importance of family-centered care.
Understanding and communicating with children.
Airway management, breathing and oxygenation.
Cardiac emergencies.
Recognizing child abuse and neglect.
Hypoperfusion and shock.
Newborn resuscitation.
EPC is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, emergency medical responders, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians. EPC is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

NAEMT’s EMS Safety course teaches students how to protect themselves and their patients while on the job. It promotes a culture of safety and helps reduce the number of on-the-job fatalities and injuries. EMS Safety is the only national, comprehensive safety course for EMS practitioners. Its interactive format features real-life case studies and compelling discussions on current safety issues, and provides participants with a forum to share their own experiences. Critical thinking stations help build participants’ risk assessment and decision-making skills.

Participants are taught:

To identify and manage the hazards that can appear during daily tasks, from offensive drivers to violent encounters to chronic stress.
Practical strategies that they can apply in the field, from situational awareness to defensive driving to verbal deflection.
How to strengthen their resiliency skills in order to combat both chronic and critical incident stress.
Topics covered include:

Applying crew resource management in EMS.
Utilizing situational awareness and defensive driving for safe emergency vehicle operations.
Employing multi-agency pre-planning, vehicle and practitioner visibility techniques, and defensive staging practices at roadside incidents.
Utilizing lift assist teams, lifting and moving equipment, and behavioral controls to protect both EMS practitioners and patients from injury.
Employing situational awareness to continually assess for the potential of violence on the scene and verbal and physical techniques to deescalate potential threats.
Practicing infection and contagion control to protect both EMS practitioners and patients from emerging threats.
Strengthening resiliency skills to help EMS practitioners cope with daily and critical incident stress.
Ensuring personal readiness for the daily challenges and hazards of working in the field through optimal personal health.
EMS Safety is offered as an 8-hour classroom course and is appropriate for all levels of EMS practitioners, other medical professionals providing prehospital patient care, and EMS supervisors and administrators. Students who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion and a wallet card good for 4 years. EMS Safety is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

First on the Scene (FOTS), developed by NAEMT and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), provides instructors with a toolkit to teach the general public basic emergency response to life-threatening emergencies until EMS arrives on the scene. Through lesson presentations and hands-on skill stations, participants will learn how to access help in the event of a life-threatening emergency and what to do until EMS arrives.

This course covers:
Activating the 911 system
Hands-only CPR and AED
Administering naloxone
Administering epinephrine
Responding to life-threatening bleeding
Penetrating chest trauma
Moving patients to safety
Positioning injured patients

GEMS provides EMS practitioners at all levels with the skills and knowledge to address the unique medical, social, environmental and communications challenges of older adults. Developed by NAEMT, in partnership with the American Geriatrics Society, GEMS empowers EMS practitioners to help improve medical outcomes and quality of life for geriatric patients.

GEMS features case-based lectures, live action video, hands-on skill stations, simulation and small group scenarios to fully engage students in the learning experience. GEMS covers the following topics:

Changes with age
Assessment of older adults
Pharmacology and medication toxicity
Psycho-social emergencies
Elder abuse
End-of-life care issues
Cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies
Trauma
Neurological emergencies and altered mental status
Mobile integrated healthcare
Special considerations for older adults in disaster response
Skin and wound care
Medical devices frequently used by older adults
Two GEMS courses are offered – a core and advanced course. They may be offered separately or sequentially. Both courses are appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, emergency medical responders, nurses, physician assistants and physicians. GEMS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

Due to the difficult environments EMS personnel encounter every day, and the impact of both direct and vicarious trauma, our EMS workforce has long faced a disproportionate challenge in maintaining their mental health resilience.

NAEMT, with support from FirstNet®, Built with AT&T, has developed a course to assist EMS agencies in building and supporting the mental health resilience of their personnel.

The Mental Health Resilience Officer (MHRO) course prepares EMS personnel to serve as their agency’s Mental Health Resilience Officer. In this role, the MHRO will engage with peers to develop an understanding of mental health issues and resilience; identify peers who are experiencing mental health stressors and crises; navigate peers in need to the right services for help; and support the development of a culture of mental health resilience and emotional wellness within the agency.

The course covers:

  • the role of a Mental Health Resilience Officer;
  • the impacts of EMS work on mental health and emotional wellbeing;
  • mental health resilience at the individual, interpersonal, and agency level;
  • communication strategies to engage your colleagues regarding mental health issues;
  • case studies in EMS mental health;
  • key elements of an effective agency EMS mental health resilience program; and
  • how to build or strengthen an agency mental health resilience program; and resources to support the MHRO.

This course is designed for EMS practitioners who meet the following qualifications:

  • at a minimum, current state certification or license as an EMT;
  • at least three years of full-time practice (or equivalent) at the EMT level or above;
  • strong interpersonal communication skills with an interest in serving in this position; and
  • prior experience with critical incident stress debriefing (CISD) and/or motivational interviewing preferred.

The NAEMT Refresher series is designed to provide EMS training officers and educators with concise courses that meet NREMT’s national recertification requirements in accordance with the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). The paramedic refresher (30 hours) is useful in the United States and paramedics may take the refresher course for their certification/licensure level. This course may also be offered in other countries to prehospital providers at the commensurate training level.

The NAEMT refresher courses are built from NAEMT’s evidence-based continuing education courses, including Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS), Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC), Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS), and EMS Safety. Applicable portions of these courses have been incorporated into the schedule of each refresher course. The refresher courses are designed to be taught  in person and virtually, using online platforms such as GoToMeeting, Zoom, Webex, Skype, or other virtual instructor-led teaching (VILT) platforms.

All NAEMT continuing education courses are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) and recognized by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT).

NAEMT's Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care. The mission of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care. PHTLS is developed by NAEMT in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma. The Committee provides the medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program. 

PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. The course utilizes the internationally recognized PHTLS textbook and covers the following topics:

AEMT's Psychological Trauma in EMS Patients (PTEP) course gives EMS practitioners the resources they need to help alleviate patients’ hidden wounds – intense fear, stress and pain – during a medical emergency.

PTEP educates EMS practitioners about the biological underpinnings of psychological trauma, the short and long-term impact on the brain and body, and warning signs that a patient is experiencing extreme psychological distress. EMS practitioners are also taught strategies and techniques to alleviate patients’ distress and help patients cope with what they’re experiencing to ward off lingering effects.

The 8-hour classroom course features scenario-based interactive sessions and lectures. Topics covered include:

  • The invisible wounds of psychological trauma

  • Reducing psychological traumatic stress

  • Understanding the physiological stress response

  • Applying the eSCAPe principle to patient care

  • Patient simulations

  • Recognizing psychological trauma within EMS

PTEP is designed for EMS practitioners and other prehospital providers. The course is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.  Students who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion, a wallet card good for 4 years, and 8 hours of CAPCE credit.

The 2nd edition of NAEMT's Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course teaches EMS practitioners and other prehospital providers how to respond to and care for patients in a civilian tactical environment.

The course presents the three phases of tactical care and integrates parallel EMS nomenclature:

  • Hot Zone/Direct Threat Care that is rendered while under attack or in adverse conditions.
  • Warm Zone/Indirect Threat Care that is rendered while the threat has been suppressed but may resurface at any point.
  • Cold Zone/Evacuation Care that is rendered while the casualty is being evacuated from the incident site. 

The 16-hour classroom course includes all new patient simulations and covers the following topics:

  • Hemorrhage control including immediate action drills for tourniquet application throughout the course;
  • Complete coverage of the MARCH assessment;
  • Surgical airway control and needle decompression;
  • Strategies for treating wounded responders in threatening environments;
  • Caring for pediatric patients;
  • Techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety; and
  • A final, mass-casualty/active shooter event simulation.

NAEMT's TECC course is endorsed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, is consistent with the current guidelines established by the Committee on TECC (Co-TECC), and meets all of the updated National Tactical Emergency Medical Support Competency Domains. This course is accredited by CAPCE for 16 hours of continuing education credit, and recognized by NREMT.

NAEMT is a recognized education partner of the Co-TECC. The Co-TECC establishes guidelines for the provision of prehospital care to injured patients during a tactical incident. The Co-TECC neither creates curriculum for the prehospital provider, nor does it endorse the curriculum of other organizations.

This is the mandatory 18 hour New York State Concealed Carry Firearms course that is required to obtain a concealed carry permit in the state of New York.  Hours will vary as needed.  There is a $50 non-refundable registration fee.  Should you not be able to make the course scheduled for your downpayment can be used for the following month's class.  After that the deposit is void.  You will receive a text or email on how to pay the balance at the class.

 

This course is an 4 hour class that provides the RN or other healthcare worker with the essential knowledge for practicing infusion therapy in any setting. The course includes insertion of traditional needle cannula.

Instruction includes the insertion procedure, techniques for proper and successful catheter insertions, care, assessment, and maintenance post catheter insertion.

  • Course includes a supervised session to practice IV insertion and troubleshooting methods.

 

The course incorporates standards, guidelines, and recommendations from the leading IV-related organizations that set the standards of IV care in the U.S.

Pharmacology is often described as a bridge science because it incorporates knowledge and skills from several basic science disciplines including physiology, biochemistry and cell and molecular biology. SIEMT offers a basic pharmacology course that is between 2-4 hours depending on the audience and includes a summative examination. We explain the basics of pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, measurements, percentages, doses of various drugs.
