PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE REGISTERING.

This New York State EMT Challenge Refresher Course will be conducted in accordance with the Revised 2015 NHTSA and New York State EMS Education Standards, the 2025 New York State BLS Protocols, the 2025 CPR Standards. The course will begin with a review of the most current guidelines, standards, and protocols applicable to the practice of Emergency Medical Technicians in New York State.

Course content will include updated patient assessment terminology and procedures; expanded knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and common disease processes; lifespan development; care of special-needs populations; and the use of equipment and treatment modalities such as CPAP and Venturi masks. Particular emphasis will be placed on current New York State BLS protocols, including IM epinephrine administration, aspirin administration, intranasal naloxone (Narcan), EMT assistance with prescribed nitroglycerin, spinal motion restriction, and other applicable protocol updates.

Challenge Examinations and Required Attendance

Students will complete both a written challenge examination and a practical skills challenge examination. The course will begin with the written challenge examination, followed by the skills challenge examination the following week.

The results of these examinations will be used to identify areas in which each student requires additional instruction or remediation. Students will be required to attend all instructional sessions associated with the areas in which they demonstrate a need for review.

Following the challenge examinations, each student will receive an individualized course contract identifying their mandatory attendance sessions. The contract must be signed and returned in order for the student to remain enrolled in the program.

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL REQUIRED TESTING SESSIONS AND CPR TRAINING.

 

Prerequisite and Online Training Requirements

All students must complete any New York State EMS mandatory online protocol update training required for the course. Required online training must be completed through Vital Signs Academy, as directed by the course administration, and evidence of successful completion must be submitted electronically prior to the first scheduled evening instructional session.

Students must also provide documentation demonstrating successful completion of the following:

  • FEMA IS-100
  • FEMA IS-200 - preferred
  • FEMA IS-700
  • FEMA IS-700
  • Approved Haz-Mat Awareness Course

SIEMT can provide students with information and a link to an approved online Hazardous Materials Awareness program, if needed.

Student Responsibility: Students are responsible for completing all assigned prerequisites, online training, challenge examinations, mandatory instructional sessions, CPR requirements, and required documentation in accordance with the deadlines established by the course administration.
